How long does it take to install gas logs?
A gas log set drops into an existing, working fireplace fast — often two to four hours if the gas line is already there and sized right. We set the burner and logs, connect and leak-test the gas, check the flame, and confirm the damper setup. It takes longer only when we have to run or extend the gas line to the fireplace, which is the licensed part of the job.
The quick version — when the gas is already there
Dropping a gas log set into an existing, working fireplace is genuinely fast — **often two to four hours** when there's already a properly sized gas line at the hearth. We set the burner pan, arrange the logs to the manufacturer's pattern so the flame doesn't impinge and soot, connect the gas and **leak-test** it, light it, and check the flame.
On a **vented** set we confirm the damper is clamped open the way code requires; on a **ventless** set the setup is different — ODS safety shutoff, room-size Btu limits, damper closed. Same visit either way.
The part that takes real time — and a license
The clock only really moves when there's **no gas at the fireplace yet**. Running or extending a gas line is the licensed part of this job, and it's the whole reason a handyman or a showroom legally can't finish it in North Carolina — a furniture store can sell you a beautiful log set, but they can't connect it to fuel.
We can: we run the line, size it correctly, pull the county permit, and **pressure-test** before the inspector signs off. If you're on propane out in Fairview, Candler, or Brevard, we also make sure the burner is set up with the right orifices and pressure — a natural-gas setup on propane soots.
Vented or ventless — pick before we come out
The choice shapes what you get more than how long it takes. **Vented logs** give you the tall, realistic yellow flame — decorative-first, with most of the heat going up the chimney. **Ventless logs** put nearly all the heat in the room and burn efficiently, but they add indoor moisture, have strict room-size and placement rules, and are restricted in bedrooms and baths.
