Is propane more expensive than natural gas for running a fireplace?

In Asheville, the fuel math works in your favor — most of the city runs on natural-gas mains, so per unit of heat your fireplace costs less to run here than the same unit out in propane country. Propane is pricier because it's trucked and stored rather than piped and metered, and inside the city you rarely pay that premium.

On the main across most of town

Asheville is natural-gas territory. Metered pipe runs through much of Montford, North Asheville, West Asheville, and the South Asheville corridor, which means the cheaper fuel is already at the curb for most homes. Those original open fireplaces in Montford and North Asheville are handsome and badly drafty — a sealed direct-vent insert keeps the look while stopping the paid-for heat from vanishing up the flue. South Asheville's newer construction usually arrives gas-ready, so an install there is mostly appliance and venting.

Fuel is the smallest line on the bill

On a natural-gas main, the per-therm rate is rarely what makes a fireplace expensive to own. The appliance you pick, how far the vent has to travel, and whether an old firebox leaks room air all matter more than the fuel gap. Burn the unit the sensible way — warm the room you're actually sitting in on a cold evening and let the rest of the house cool off — and even a real fuel difference barely shows up. Elevation keeps our nights in the 20s deep into spring, so that evening fire earns its keep.

Permitted here, and the showroom's local

Every gas line we run inside the city gets a Buncombe County permit and an inspector at the finish — that's what protects a home sale and your insurance down the road. Our showroom sits right here at 629 Emma Rd, so you can see a Napoleon Ascent or a Heat & Glo unit lit before you commit to anything. Call (828) 545-0525 for a free in-home assessment.
