Is propane more expensive than natural gas for running a fireplace?
In Asheville, the fuel math works in your favor — most of the city runs on natural-gas mains, so per unit of heat your fireplace costs less to run here than the same unit out in propane country. Propane is pricier because it's trucked and stored rather than piped and metered, and inside the city you rarely pay that premium.

Those original open fireplaces in Montford and North Asheville are handsome and badly drafty — a sealed direct-vent insert keeps the look while stopping the paid-for heat from vanishing up the flue. South Asheville's newer construction usually arrives gas-ready, so an install there is mostly appliance and venting.
