Is propane more expensive than natural gas for running a fireplace?
In Candler, the honest answer is that it depends on your street — the fuel map genuinely splits here. Closer to Enka, natural-gas mains reach many of the newer subdivisions, so those homes run the cheaper piped fuel; out the rural stretches toward Pisgah Highway and Sand Hill, propane is common, and propane costs more per unit because it's trucked rather than metered.
Where the fuel line actually falls
Candler is one of the places we can't answer the fuel question until we know the address, so the first thing we do is check your street. The fast-growing subdivisions on the Enka side often tie into a natural-gas main, which is cheaper per unit because a utility pipes and meters it. Head out the rural corridors and you're into propane country — delivered by truck, stored in a tank, priced by a market that swings with the season. Propane burns hotter per unit and claws a little back, but not enough to erase the premium.
New boxes, real-heat upgrades
A lot of Candler's new construction came with basic decorative builder-grade fireboxes, and owners want them turned into something that actually heats within a few years. A sealed direct-vent insert does that on either fuel, and it burns cleanly — which matters in Hominy Valley's natural bowl, where a clean-combustion appliance is easier on the local air than an open, smoky fire. On propane, that efficiency also trims the per-unit premium by simply burning less. We'd rather get you the right appliance than the most expensive one.
