Many Backgrounds. One Standard.
Mills River, North Carolina

My gas fireplace is 20+ years old and parts are discontinued — can it still be repaired, or is replacement smarter?

Out in Mills River, the answer starts with propane. Many of these large rural lots run LP, and an old unit's discontinued part has to match not just the model but the fuel, its orifices and pressures. Universal thermocouples and igniters usually still fit; a proprietary LP valve with no substitute is where a sealed replacement becomes the smarter Henderson County choice.

Propane changes the parts equation

Mills River is mixed-fuel country with a lot of homes on propane, and that matters when you're sourcing for a 20-year-old fireplace. LP burns hotter than natural gas and runs at different pressures, so a substitute valve or burner has to be the propane-correct version, or it soots the glass and wastes fuel. The good news is that many failed parts here, a worn thermocouple, a generic igniter, or a tired blower, cross-reference cleanly, so a repair is often just a small part and a visit.

The Horse Shoe and Banner Farm areas run especially rural, with tanks instead of mains, while some of the newer developments nearer the valley have natural gas, so we verify the fuel before we quote a part or a replacement. Mixing the two up is the fastest way to soot a perfectly good unit, so it's the first thing we pin down on an older fireplace.

If it's time for a new one

When the broken piece is proprietary and gone for good, a modern sealed direct-vent unit set up for propane heats a rural home far more efficiently than a 20-plus-year-old box, and a Kozy Heat is a genuine cold-climate performer built for exactly this. Millivolt or battery-backup ignition means heat when the lines go down out here, no small thing on a rural lot. We coordinate the tank with your propane supplier and, as your licensed gas contractor, run and pressure-test the gas connection and pull the Henderson County permit.

Plan the outdoor side too

Mills River's open valley suits outdoor living, and while we're assessing an aging indoor unit it's a good time to think about a gas fire pit for the entertaining season. We carry Napoleon, Heat & Glo, Kozy Heat, and Valor, and offer financing for qualified buyers. A $125 diagnostic settles the indoor question first. Call (828) 545-0525.
