My remote says the fireplace is on but nothing lights — what's wrong?

If the remote's screen shows the fireplace 'on' but no flame appears, the remote is doing its job — the signal is getting through — and the problem is downstream at the ignition or gas supply. The usual causes: the gas is not turned on, the pilot or igniter has failed, the receiver batteries are too weak to actually fire the valve, or a safety sensor is stopping the burner.

The remote isn't your problem — so what is?

A lit display and a confirmation beep tell you the handset has power and is talking to the receiver. That is good news: it rules out the remote itself. Now the trail leads to everything between the receiver and the flame. First, confirm the gas is actually on — a shutoff valve left closed, or a propane tank that ran empty out at the cabin, produces exactly this symptom. Then look at the ignition: a standing pilot that has gone out, or an electronic igniter that is not sparking, will leave you with a cheerful 'on' screen and a cold firebox.

Weak receiver batteries: the sneaky one

Here is the fix people miss most. The remote can have plenty of power to send its signal while the receiver's batteries are too weak to do the heavy lifting — actually energizing the gas valve solenoid or firing the spark. So the display says on, the receiver even clicks, but there is not enough juice to open the valve. Fresh, high-quality batteries in the receiver box solve this surprisingly often. It is the first thing we have people try after confirming the gas is on.

Ignition and safety sensors

If gas and batteries check out, the culprit is usually in the ignition and safety chain: a weak thermopile that cannot hold the valve open, a dirty or misaligned pilot, an electronic ignition module in lockout, or a tripped safety sensor. These are not DIY items — testing a valve or thermopile and relighting a pilot correctly is licensed gas work, and it is ours. Most are a small, affordable part and a single visit.
