Why is my gas fireplace remote not working?
Nine times out of ten, a dead gas-fireplace remote is batteries — in the handset, in the receiver box, or both, since most systems power the receiver with batteries too. Start there. If fresh batteries do not fix it, the remote and receiver may have lost their pairing, the receiver's mode switch may be in the wrong position, or the receiver itself has failed.
Batteries first — in both places
The single most common fix is the one people skip: the receiver box has batteries of its own. Almost every gas fireplace with a remote hides a small receiver behind the lower grille that runs on AA batteries (some also have a 9-volt or a battery backup pack). You can put fresh batteries in the handset all day, but if the receiver's are dead, nothing happens. Change both sets at once with good alkaline batteries. We tell customers to swap them every year at their tune-up so they are never caught cold on the first chilly night.
The little switch that trips everyone up
Most receivers have a small three-position switch labeled something like OFF, ON, and REMOTE (or a manual setting). If it got bumped to OFF, nothing works at all; if it is on ON, the fireplace ignores the remote entirely and may even run on its own; it needs to be on REMOTE to listen to the handset. This switch lives right on the receiver box, so once you have found the box to change its batteries, glance at the switch position while you are in there.
When it's pairing or a failed receiver
If batteries are fresh and the switch is right and it still will not respond, the remote and receiver may have lost their pairing and need to be re-synced, or radio interference is confusing the signal, or the receiver has simply worn out.
