How do I re-sync or pair a fireplace remote with its receiver?
Most gas-fireplace remotes pair by pressing a small 'learn' or 'reset' button on the receiver box, then pressing a button on the handset within a few seconds until you hear a beep — but the exact steps vary by brand and model. Fresh batteries in both the remote and the receiver come first, because a weak set is the most common reason a pairing will not take.
The general routine
Pairing is an electronics task, not a gas task, so it is one of the few things you can reasonably try yourself. The pattern is similar across systems: find the receiver box behind the lower grille, look for a small button often labeled 'learn,' 'program,' or 'reset,' press and hold it until you hear a beep, then press the ON button on your handset until you get a second beep confirming the two have shaken hands. Different systems word it a little differently, and some use a set of tiny code (DIP) switches instead of a learn button, so the model's manual is the final word.
Why pairing won't 'take'
When a re-sync fails, it is almost always one of a few things. Weak batteries top the list — the receiver needs enough power to accept and store the new code, so start with fresh cells in both units. Next is the mode switch: it needs to be on the REMOTE (not ON or OFF) position for the receiver to listen. Radio interference from another remote, a garage-door opener, or a neighbor's unit on the same frequency can also scramble the handshake, which is more common in townhomes and condos than out on a mountain lot.
