Why won't the flame height change when I adjust it on my fireplace remote?
If the flame won't respond to the remote's up and down control, the modulating part of your gas valve isn't getting the signal — either the remote and receiver have lost their pairing, the receiver's motor or the valve's variable stepper has failed, or your model is on/off only and was never meant to adjust. It's diagnosable, usually a receiver or valve fix.
First, does your unit even modulate?
Not every gas fireplace has an adjustable flame. Plenty of older units — and some current ones — are simply on or off, and their remote's flame buttons do nothing because there's nothing to turn. Modulating models, like many IntelliFire and Valor setups, drive a variable valve up and down. So step one is knowing what you own: if it was never a two-height flame, the remote is behaving exactly as designed and nothing's broken.
When it should adjust but won't
On a unit that does modulate, the up/down command travels from the remote to the receiver to a stepper motor or variable section of the gas valve. Break any link and the flame gets stuck at one height. The common breaks are a lost pairing between remote and receiver, dead batteries in the receiver box — not just the remote — the remote left in the wrong mode, or a failed receiver or valve motor. Dead batteries alone stop far more fireplaces than people expect.

We re-pair the remote, confirm fresh batteries in both the remote and the receiver, and meter the receiver and valve to see where the signal dies — receiver or valve, they're different repairs and different costs, and we'll tell you which before proceeding.
