Where is the receiver box for my fireplace remote located?
On most gas fireplaces the receiver box is tucked behind the lower louver, grille, or access panel at the bottom front of the unit — the same compartment that holds the gas valve and control knob. Slide or lift off that panel and you will usually find a small plastic box with a battery door, an antenna wire, and a two- or three-position mode switch.
The usual hiding spots
Manufacturers put the receiver where it can 'hear' the remote but stay out of sight. On a typical direct-vent fireplace that means behind the lower louver or the kick panel at the base — pop that off and it is right there next to the valve. On some models it sits off to one side of the control cavity, or clipped into a small pocket along the inside of the firebox opening. On inserts and built-ins, it is often behind the surround or faceplate rather than a simple snap-off grille, which makes it harder to reach.
How to recognize it
The receiver is a small plastic box, usually a couple of inches across, with a few telltale features: a battery compartment (commonly AA, sometimes with a 9-volt or a backup pack), a thin wire antenna sticking out, wires running to the gas valve, and that little slide switch marked with something like OFF, ON, and REMOTE. When you are in there changing batteries or checking the switch, resist the urge to tug on any of the wiring going to the valve — that side is gas-control wiring and belongs to a technician.
When you can't find it
If your louver does not come off easily, or you have an insert where the receiver lives behind a surround that should not be pulled off casually, do not force anything.
