Many Backgrounds. One Standard.
Canton, North Carolina

We're building a new home — what should we rough in now for a future outdoor fire feature?

In Canton, where recent Pigeon River flooding water-damaged gas appliances and connections across the valley, a new build is the moment to do the gas side right from the start. Rough in a properly sized line to the future patio and cap it, and first confirm whether your lot is on a natural-gas main or propane.

Build with the floodplain in mind

Canton sits on the Pigeon River valley floor, and the last few years taught the town what high water does to gas connections. On a new build, plan the fuel side and any tank or meter placement with flood elevation in mind, and keep the buried outdoor line and its shutoff detailed for that reality.

Get the buried line to the backyard in while the ground is open — trenching a finished driveway and lawn later is the expensive version. Valley-floor fog and dampness here rust dampers and caps early, so a sealed gas fire feature holds up better outdoors than you'd expect.

Natural gas or propane — Haywood runs both

Canton is mixed-fuel: some addresses reach a gas main, others run propane. On gas, size the meter for the combined outdoor load; on propane, set a tank sized for the house plus the future fire feature and placed for delivery access above the flood-prone low ground.

Either way, run one generously sized line with branches for a fire pit, grill, and patio heater. The connection is licensed work — your builder can't legally make it. We run and pressure-test the line, pull the Haywood County permit, and meet the inspector.
