What annual maintenance does a wood-burning insert need?
In Black Mountain, a wood-burning insert needs its annual sweep and liner inspection like anywhere — but the Swannanoa Valley's damp, shaded setting adds a wrinkle. Cold-air inversions leave mornings 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville, and Montreat's heavily wooded lots keep chimneys shaded and slow to dry, so moisture on the liner gets extra attention.
Shade, damp, and a long chill
The valley here traps cold air, so Black Mountain and Montreat homes start their fires earlier and run them longer than the calendar would suggest. The other half of the story is shade — those wooded Montreat lots keep houses cool and the chimney masonry damp, and a chimney that never fully dries is one where the liner and cap corrode faster. When we service a wood insert here, we look closely at rust on the damper and cap, the top-plate seal, and any moisture staining inside the liner, not just the creosote layer.
Everything the visit includes
The core work is the same every year: sweep and inspect the full stainless liner, check the firebrick for cracks, test the door and glass gaskets, vacuum cold ash, clean the glass, and dust the blower. Most inserts have to come partway out of the masonry so the whole liner can be reached and read properly — a real service call, not a quick chore.
You're only about fifteen minutes east of our Emma Rd showroom, so scheduling is easy. Book late summer or early fall, before the valley's cold mornings arrive in force. We pull the Buncombe County permit where it's called for and service every major wood brand to CSIA and NFPA standards. Call (828) 545-0525.
