What annual maintenance does a wood-burning insert need?

Flat Rock's character comes from its old houses — some going back to the 1800s, with big open hearths and original clay tile flue liners well past their prime. A wood insert is a graceful upgrade for those fireplaces: it seals off the drafty open box, preserves the mantel and surround you love, and vents through a properly sized stainless liner instead of the crumbling clay. That stainless liner is what gets swept and inspected each year. But we also check the condition of the old masonry chimney it runs inside, because aging tile, loose crowns, and worn top-plates behind an insert are exactly the failure points a century-old chimney develops.

The full annual routine

Every year we sweep and inspect the entire liner, check the firebrick, test the door and glass gaskets for a tight seal, vacuum cold ash, clean the glass, and dust the blower. Reaching the whole liner run often means drawing the insert partway out of the opening, so this is professional work to CSIA and NFPA standards.

These old open hearths pull cold drafts into rooms; a sealed insert fixes that draftiness while keeping the home's character, and annual service keeps it doing its job.
