What annual maintenance does a wood-burning insert need?
Every year a wood-burning insert needs its stainless liner and chimney swept for creosote, the firebox and firebrick checked, the door and glass gaskets inspected, the glass cleaned, and the surround and blower dusted — ideally before heating season. Because the insert sits inside an old masonry fireplace with its own liner, that liner is the part homeowners forget.
The liner is the heart of it
A wood insert is a sealed firebox dropped into an old masonry opening and vented by a stainless-steel liner running up the flue. That liner has to be swept and inspected every year — creosote builds inside it exactly like it does in any wood chimney, and a clogged or cracked liner is a chimney-fire risk.
Here's the catch a lot of homeowners miss: many inserts have to be partially pulled from the fireplace to sweep and inspect the liner properly. It's not the quick job people expect, which is one more reason it's a professional visit, not a DIY afternoon.
The seasonal checklist
