What annual maintenance does a wood-burning insert need?

Heavy use, catch-up maintenance

Much of Sylva's housing — the rentals around Cullowhee and Western Carolina, the historic homes down in Dillsboro — gets burned hard and serviced sporadically. A wood insert that's skipped a year or two of maintenance builds creosote in its liner, develops worn gaskets, and hides small cracks a yearly inspection would have flagged. On top of that, the Tuckasegee valley funnels cold, damp air, and that river moisture rusts dampers and degrades flue liners faster than in drier towns. So in Sylva the annual visit is often a catch-up as much as a tune-up, and it's worth getting onto a regular schedule.

What the service covers

We sweep and inspect the entire liner run, check the cap and top-plate seal for corrosion, look over the firebrick, test the door gasket, vacuum cold ash, clean the glass, and dust the blower. Reaching the whole liner usually means pulling the insert partway out of the masonry — proper professional work to CSIA and NFPA standards.
