What annual maintenance does a wood-burning insert need?

Mills River spreads across farmland and forest in large lots, and plenty of homes out here sit on propane rather than a natural-gas main. That's part of why a wood insert makes sense — it burns fuel you can stack in the yard and throws heat even when the power and the propane truck are both out of reach. The catch is that all that self-reliance rides on a stainless liner that has to be swept and inspected every year. Creosote builds in it like it does in any wood chimney, and out on these rural properties a small problem can sit unnoticed longer, so the annual visit is your safeguard.

What we check, and when

Each year we sweep the full liner run, inspect the cap and top-plate, check firebrick for cracks, test the door gasket, vacuum cold ash, clean the glass, and dust the blower. Many inserts have to be eased partway out of the masonry so the whole liner can be reached — a scheduled service, not a quick pass.
