What are river rock or stone media sets for gas fireplaces?

River rock and stone media sets are heat-rated ceramic or natural-look stones — smooth river pebbles, lava rock, or larger accent stones — placed over a gas burner in place of logs. They give a natural, spa-like, contemporary feel that bridges rustic and modern. Common as a factory option on modern gas fireplaces and very popular in gas fire pits.

What these media are

Stone media come in a few flavors: smooth, rounded river rock in earthy grays and tans; porous black lava rock; and larger accent stones. They're either heat-rated ceramic made to look like stone, or genuine fire-safe stone — never landscaping rock, which can trap moisture and pop or even burst when heated. Over a burner they read calm and organic, a nice middle ground between a traditional log bed and a sparkling glass one.

Indoors versus on the patio

Inside, river rock suits modern and transitional rooms that want warmth without a rustic log look — think mountain-modern homes with natural stone and wood tones. Outdoors is where stone media really earn their keep: lava rock and river stone are the workhorse fill for gas fire pits and fire tables, holding heat and shrugging off weather on a cool Asheville evening. If you're deciding between lava rock and fire glass for a fire pit, glass sparkles and stone reads natural — both work well.

Doing it safely

As with all alternative media, the set has to be approved for your appliance and arranged so the burner gets the air it needs — piling stone into a sealed or ventless fireplace it wasn't tested with causes sooting and safety issues. We spec stone media with the unit, use the manufacturer's kit for indoor fireplaces, and make sure a fire pit's burner and stone are matched.
