What if the propane truck can't get up my mountain driveway in winter — how do I avoid running out?

Terrain is the risk here, not the supplier

Marshall's homes cling to steep hillsides above the French Broad, and even the revitalized downtown is stacked against the mountain on tight lots. That's beautiful and it's a delivery problem: a heavy propane truck needs room and traction, and a narrow, iced switchback to a hillside house gives it neither. When a Marshall tank runs dry mid-winter, access is almost always why.

So the whole game is reserve. A tank sized larger than the house strictly needs means fewer deliveries up a hard drive and a real cushion if one has to wait for a thaw.

Draft is trickier on a tight lot, too

Those same close, gorge-side lots complicate chimney routing and draft — cold air can sit in a flue like a plug and the surrounding ridges throw downdrafts. A sealed direct-vent appliance sidesteps a lot of that, venting out a sidewall instead of fighting a tall, cold masonry flue, and it burns efficiently enough on propane to keep fills far apart.
