What is a peninsula (three-sided) or bay gas fireplace, and how does it differ from a see-through?
A peninsula (three-sided) fireplace projects into a room with glass on three sides and a solid back, while a bay unit bows the glass outward for a wider viewing angle. Both are viewed from a single room. A see-through has glass on two opposite open sides, so it's viewed from two different rooms at once. The core difference: a see-through is a shared window between two spaces; peninsula and bay are one-room fireplaces with extra viewing angles.
Three-sided (peninsula): the divider that glows
A peninsula fireplace has a glass front and two glass ends with a solid back, so it juts out into the room and you can watch the flame from three angles. It's a favorite for the end of a half-wall or a room divider that separates, say, a living area from a hallway without fully closing it off. You get the drama of glass wrapping the fire while keeping one finished, solid side.
Bay: the panoramic single view
A bay unit angles or bows the glass outward at the front corners, pushing the flame view toward you and widening the picture from a seating area. It still lives in and faces one room — it's about a bigger, more immersive flame from the couch, not about being seen from a second space.
How the see-through is different
A see-through is open and glazed on two opposite sides, built into a wall between two rooms — living and dining, a great room and a foyer, or even an indoor/outdoor pass-through. One fireplace, two rooms, viewed from both. Because heat and venting exit two glass faces, see-throughs carry more clearance and venting complexity than a single-face peninsula or bay, and the surrounding finishes have to respect that on both sides.
