What size gas insert will fit my existing fireplace?

Here we also check the flue liner first, because Tuckasegee valley moisture degrades liners fast, and a sealed insert needs a sound, correctly sized one to seat properly.
River valley is hard on liners
Cold-air drainage and river moisture in the Tuckasegee valley rust dampers and degrade flue liners faster than you'd expect, so before we size an insert we look at the condition of the flue as well as the firebox. A sealed gas insert is installed with a correctly sized stainless liner anyway, which solves a deteriorated one. We measure front width, rear width, height, and depth, and the tightest number governs the model.
Well-used rentals and older masonry
Student and rental housing near WCU tends to be heavily used and unevenly maintained, and historic Dillsboro homes carry older masonry chimneys, so the fireboxes we measure in Sylva vary a lot.
