What size propane tank do I need to run a gas fireplace or log set at home?
In Sylva, we size the tank for how the home actually gets used. The student rentals near WCU run hard and inconsistently, and tenants can't schedule a propane fill — so a landlord is better off with a 250-gallon tank than a small one. A single fireplace still fits a 120- or 250-gallon tank; whole-house loads go to 500.
Hard-used rentals need margin, not a minimum tank
A lot of Sylva and Cullowhee housing is student rentals, used heavily and unevenly, and the people living there aren't the ones watching the propane gauge. For a landlord, a slightly larger tank means fewer mid-semester run-outs and fewer emergency calls — a 250-gallon tank buys that cushion over a 120-gallon (about 420-lb) upright.
If the rental's range, water heater, and heat are also propane, combined demand on a cold night pushes us to a 500-gallon tank so the fireplace holds pressure.

Down in Dillsboro, the historic homes carry older masonry chimneys, and a conversion there often means a sealed gas insert with a fresh liner rather than fighting a marginal flue. Whatever the home, connecting the fuel is licensed work — we pull the permit with Jackson County and pressure-test the line.
