How Real Fyre sizing works
The nominal size, say a 24-inch set, roughly tracks the length of the front logs. But a firebox isn't a box; it tapers narrower toward the back and often slopes at the sides, so a good fit depends on four numbers: front width, rear width, depth, and height.
A gas log set also needs clearance to the side walls and, on glass-front units, to the glass. That's why the opening width alone never tells the whole story.
Why a real measurement beats a guess
Too big, and the logs jam against the walls, the flame impinges where it shouldn't, and you get sooting. Too small, and the set looks marooned in the opening with a weak, undersized ember bed. Neither is what you paid for.
In the older masonry fireboxes we see weekly in Asheville homes, the openings are rarely square, so eyeballing it is a recipe for a return. We take all four measurements on site.
