Who installs wood stoves — a chimney sweep or a fireplace dealer?

In Asheville, installing a wood stove is a fireplace dealer's job, not a chimney sweep's. The dealer sizes the stove, sets the hearth pad, holds clearances to combustibles, and runs or relines the chimney — then pulls the Buncombe County permit. A sweep cleans and inspects an existing flue. Steady Flame does both, right from our Emma Road showroom.

Turning an old Montford hearth into a real heater

The most common wood-stove request we get in Asheville isn't a blank wall — it's an original open masonry fireplace in Montford, North Asheville, or West Asheville that the owner wants to actually heat with. That old flue is almost always too large and unlined to draft a modern stove cleanly, so the job includes a stainless liner sized to the appliance, not just a stove set on the bricks.

South Asheville's newer construction is a cleaner slate — frequently a fresh insulated Class A chimney run straight up through the roof, paired with a clean-face or freestanding stove. Either way the clearances, the hearth-pad footprint, and the draft are engineered for your specific room.

What a sweep does — and where it stops

A chimney sweep is the right call once the stove is in: clearing creosote and checking the flue every year, which we also handle on our service side. What a sweep generally won't do is design and build a code-compliant installation from scratch. At 2,100 feet, with nighttime lows in the 20s well into spring, an Asheville stove burns hard for a long season, so that build has to be right.

If your current stove predates EPA certification, this is also the moment to weigh a cleaner, more efficient replacement rather than reline for an old smoker.

The showroom's in your backyard

Because we're headquartered a few minutes away at 629 Emma Rd, the crew that engineers your Regency or Jotul install is the same one that comes back for the fall cleaning — one accountable company start to finish. Stop by the showroom to see the stoves lit, or call (828) 545-0525 for a free in-home assessment.
