Who installs wood stoves — a chimney sweep or a fireplace dealer?

In Black Mountain, installing a wood stove is the fireplace dealer's work, not the chimney sweep's. The dealer sizes the stove, sets the hearth and clearances, and runs or relines a chimney that will actually draft in these wooded valleys, then permits it with Buncombe County. A sweep cleans and inspects an existing flue afterward. Steady Flame does both, 15 minutes from the showroom.

Downdrafts are the local enemy

Black Mountain and Montreat sit in heavily wooded, shaded valleys where the Swannanoa inversion pools cold air and mornings run 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville. Tall trees and ridge lines around here generate downdrafts that push smoke back into a room if the chimney isn't tall enough or sized right. That's why a wood-stove install is engineering, not just placement — the flue height, the liner diameter, and the cap have to be matched to your lot. A sweep keeps a working flue clean; the dealer is the one who makes it draft in the first place.

A gas town that still wants wood

Natural gas runs through much of Black Mountain, but plenty of owners in the wooded neighborhoods above town want a wood stove specifically — heat that doesn't care whether the power or the gas is flowing. We size the appliance to the room, honor clearances to combustibles, and set a code-compliant hearth pad, whether that's a Regency, a Jotul, or a HearthStone. If your existing masonry flue can carry it, we reline to the stove; if not, we run a fresh insulated Class A chimney.
