That means more cold-start fires — and a cold flue is a smoke problem before wind ever enters the picture. Add a gust that dives off the surrounding ridges and an already-sluggish open fireplace loses the draft fight entirely. What a Hazelwood open firebox is up against

The older Hazelwood housing stock was built with large open masonry fireplaces — beautiful, but aerodynamically the hardest to keep smoke-free. A wide throat and an oversized flue move exhaust slowly, so it takes very little downdraft to reverse them. A wind-directional cap is the first move, along with confirming the flue clears the roof and nearby trees by enough to escape the turbulence.
