Why does my fireplace smoke only on windy days?
Weaverville has two smoke stories. In Reems Creek's new construction, complex rooflines and steep gables create pressure pockets that shove wind down a nearby flue; downtown's older masonry fireboxes simply draw too weakly to resist a gust. Either way a wind hitting the wrong spot reverses the draft. A wind-directional cap solves most of it, and roofline geometry sometimes calls for added flue height.
New builds aren't immune
It's a myth that only old chimneys smoke. A lot of Reems Creek's newer homes have tall, multi-gabled rooflines, and when a chimney is set into a valley of the roof or beside a taller wing, wind sweeping over that geometry creates a high-pressure zone right at the flue top. The gust essentially caps the chimney with air. Builders rarely account for it, and the fix is often just getting the flue up above that pressure pocket, plus a directional cap.
Downtown's older fireboxes
The original masonry fireplaces in older downtown Weaverville homes have the opposite problem — a wide, slow-drawing throat that any downdraft can overpower. There the answer leans toward a sealed insert or a wind cap. The town's north-facing valley also warms slowly in spring, stretching the cold-flue season and the number of sluggish cold-start fires that smoke before wind is even a factor.
Sorting out which you have
Because the cause is different in a 2020 build than an 1890 one, the assessment is different too.
