Why does my gas fireplace's main burner light and then go out after a few seconds?
In Brevard, the same light-and-die symptom more often traces to corrosion than to spiders. The thermopile still has to hold your gas valve open on its own millivolts, but in a town that takes 80-plus inches of rain a year, damp works into pilot connections and valve terminals, bleeds voltage, and the burner quits within seconds.
Transylvania's rain gets into the electrics
Brevard's crawl spaces, chimney chases, and fireboxes stay damp for months, and moisture is quietly hard on the low-voltage side of a gas fireplace. Corroded spade connectors at the valve, a green-tinged thermopile lead, or oxidation on the terminals all steal the tiny millivoltage the valve needs to stay latched — so the flame catches on residual voltage and then drops. It looks like a dead thermopile, but sometimes it's just a bad connection the wet season created.
