Why does my gas fireplace's main burner light and then go out after a few seconds?
In Candler, the answer starts with your fuel: gas mains reach the Enka-Candler side while plenty of properties out Hominy Valley and toward Pisgah Highway run on propane. Either way, a burner that lights then quits means a weak thermopile can't hold the valve — and on LP, a cool or fouled pilot is a frequent root.
Two fuels in one community
Candler straddles the line: the built-up Enka-Candler corridor is on natural gas, while the more rural properties toward Hominy Valley and Pisgah Highway lean on propane, and the two behave differently. On propane, a pilot orifice that's partly clogged or a pressure that's drifted burns a small, cool flame that never fully heats the thermopile, so the sensor can't hold the valve — the same drop-out a natural-gas home gets from an aged-out thermopile.
Newer subdivisions, basic fireboxes
A lot of Candler's fast-growing subdivisions came with basic, decorative builder-grade fireboxes, and owners tend to want more real heat out of them within a few years. When one of those lights and quits, it's usually the thermopile or a clogged pilot — an inexpensive fix — and it's also the moment to talk honestly about whether a sealed insert would serve the home better. Hominy Valley's bowl traps air, so clean-burning sealed units are a fair conversation here.
Confirm the fuel, then the part
We identify the fuel, clean and check the pilot, and meter the thermopile open and under load — on propane the reading only counts once the pilot's right. Candler's in Buncombe County, 15 minutes west, and gas work stays with a licensed contractor. Call (828) 545-0525.
