Why is my wood stove glass turning black?

Black, sooty glass means incomplete combustion — most often wet wood, a fire run too low and slow, or a failed door gasket. Modern stoves keep the glass clear with a curtain of air flowing down the inside of it; when the fire burns cool or dirty, that air-wash can't keep up and creosote deposits on the glass instead of staying off it.

What keeps the glass clear

EPA stoves route a stream of combustion air down the inside of the glass — the air-wash — to hold soot off. It only works when the fire is hot enough to burn clean and the air is actually flowing.

Burn wet wood, or damp the stove way down for a long overnight burn, and the glass hazes and blackens within a single fire. The flip side is encouraging: a hot, dry fire will often burn the glass clean again on its own.

Gaskets and how you load

A door gasket that's leaking, or wood stacked right up against the glass, both defeat the air-wash and blacken that spot. Load wood away from the glass, and check the gasket with the dollar-bill test.

Uneven blackening tells a story — one side or the bottom going dark usually points to a gasket leaking there or a consistent loading habit, not the whole stove.

The bigger signal

Blackening glass is really your stove reporting that it isn't burning clean — which also means creosote building in the flue and less heat reaching the room. Treat it as a prompt, not just a cosmetic annoyance: dry your wood, run the fire hotter, check the gasket, and get the chimney swept if it's been a while.
