Why is my wood stove burning through wood so fast?

Your stove is getting too much air, so the wood burns hot and fast instead of slow and controlled. Usual causes: an air control that won't close down — often a worn door or glass gasket leaking air, or a cracked firebox — plus too-dry or too-small wood and running it wide open. A tight stove on hardwood should hold a burn for hours.

Too much air is the theme

A wood stove controls burn rate by controlling air. If it's eating wood, air is getting in somewhere it shouldn't — a door gasket flattened and no longer sealing, a leaking glass gasket, a warped door, or a cracked firebox pulling in uncontrolled air. You dial the control down and the fire barely responds.

The dollar-bill test catches most of it: close the door on a bill and tug; if it slides free with no drag, the gasket at that spot is shot and leaking combustion air.

Fuel and loading habits

Softwoods and small splits burn fast and hot; dense seasoned hardwood — oak, hickory, and locust, all plentiful in WNC — burns long and steady. Load bigger splits, packed reasonably tight.

Once the fire is up to temperature, turn the air down to a cruise. Running wide open all evening, or feeding one small split at a time, both burn straight through a woodpile with little heat to show for it.

Right stove, right size

An oversized stove for the room gets choked down constantly to avoid roasting you out, which burns inefficiently and creosotes the flue; an undersized one gets run flat-out and never rests.
