Why won't my wood stove get up to temperature?
The most common reason is wet or unseasoned wood — a stove can't reach cruising temperature while it's boiling water out of the fuel. After that: too little air while establishing the fire, weak draft from a cold or dirty flue, or an oversized stove for the space. Dry wood and full air on start-up fix most cases.
It starts with the wood
A stove makes real heat by burning the gases coming off the wood — secondary combustion — and wet wood never gets there. Its energy goes to evaporating moisture, so you get a smoky, low fire that sits around 200 to 300 degrees on the stovetop thermometer and never climbs.
Seasoned hardwood under 20% moisture is non-negotiable. Wood sold as 'seasoned' routinely tests green on the meter, and that's the single biggest reason a stove won't reach temperature.
Air and draft
Establish the fire with the air control wide open and the flue drafting hard — choke it down too early and it stalls before it builds. A cold flue on a mild day drafts weakly, and creosote or a partly blocked cap make it worse.
Prime the flue, get the fire ripping, then dial it back. A flue thermometer is worth having — it shows you when you've reached the clean-burn zone instead of guessing.
Sizing and internals
An oversized stove run low to avoid overheating the room never reaches efficient temperatures and creosotes up. A catalytic stove with a failed combustor also loses its heat boost.
