How can I tell if my wood stove's catalytic combustor has failed?

The tell-tale signs are less heat, more wood burned, smoke from the chimney when there shouldn't be, and a stove that won't hold a clean burn even with dry wood. Physically, a failed combustor looks broken up, crumbling, or plugged with ash, and won't glow with the fire going. Most catalysts last around 6 to 10 seasons, then get swapped — not repaired.

What it does, and how failure shows

Only catalytic stoves have one — a honeycomb, usually ceramic and coated with catalyst, that lets smoke re-burn at lower temperatures, boosting efficiency and cutting emissions. When it degrades or plugs, you lose that second burn.

You'll see the symptoms: heat output drops, wood consumption climbs, you smell more smoke and see it puffing from the chimney, and creosote builds faster. A catalyst probe or thermometer that never climbs into its active range is a strong sign it's spent.

Inspecting it

With the stove cold, pull the combustor per your manual and look it over. Cracked or crumbling cells, broken pieces, a peeling coating, or channels packed solid with fly ash all mean it's finished.

Light plugging can sometimes be gently cleaned; structural break-up cannot. If it won't 'light off' — start glowing — once the fire is hot, it's done. Over-firing, wet wood, and burning trash all kill catalysts early, well before their 6-to-10-season life.
