Why is my wood stove getting too hot or glowing red?

A glowing-red stove is over-firing — burning far hotter than it's designed to — and it's a real hazard you should act on now. The usual cause is too much air: a control left wide open, a door or ash-pan not fully closed, or a leaking gasket. Shut the air down, confirm everything's sealed, and let it cool. Never run a stove hot enough to glow.

Over-firing, and why it's dangerous

Glowing metal means firebox temperatures well past the stove's design limits. Sustained, that warps steel, cracks welds and firebrick, destroys the baffle and any catalytic combustor, and can overheat the flue and nearby framing to the point of a house-fire risk.

This is one of the few stove situations that's genuinely urgent. If it's glowing right now: close the air control fully, make sure the loading door and ash-pan door are latched tight, and let the fire burn itself down. Do not throw water into it.

Why it's getting too much air

An air control that won't close — a stuck linkage or a failed gasket — a cracked-open or leaking door, an ash-pan door left ajar, or overloading with a big pile of small dry wood all push the fire past control. Softwood and pallet scrap flash especially hot.

On a bitter, windy WNC night, a strong draft can also drive a stove harder than usual, so you may need to damp it down sooner than you would on a mild evening.

After it cools, get it checked

Repeated over-firing damages a stove even when it looks fine afterward. Have the gaskets, door seal, air control, baffle, and flue inspected before you trust it again, and confirm the stove is the right size and installed with proper clearances to combustibles.
