At what tank percentage should I schedule a propane refill?

If your Asheville home runs off the natural-gas main — most of the city core does — there's no tank and no percentage to watch. For homes on a propane tank, up the ridges and older lots beyond the main, plan a fill at 30% and hold a 20% floor. That reserve keeps steady vapor pressure through our cold-snap nights and gives the truck room before you run dry.

On the main or on a tank?

In Asheville the first question is which fuel you actually have. West Asheville, Biltmore Village, and much of North Asheville sit on the natural-gas main, where supply is continuous and the 30% rule is moot. But plenty of Montford-era and ridge-top properties beyond the main still run a propane tank feeding the fireplace — and those owners live by the gauge. Knowing which camp you're in is step one, and it's the first thing we confirm on any in-home assessment.

Reading the gauge right

A propane gauge shows percent of capacity, not gallons, and a full tank only fills to about 80% so the liquid has room to expand as it warms. Call your supplier for a top-off at 30%, and treat 20% as the line you don't cross. Below that, a tank struggles to build vapor pressure on a hard Asheville night — elevation here keeps lows in the 20s well into spring — and a starved fireplace burns poorly right when you want it most.

We're right here on Emma Rd

Our showroom sits at 629 Emma Rd, so an Asheville sizing visit is a short drive with no travel surcharge and a quick turnaround. When we add or convert a fireplace, we spec the tank to your real heat load so refills come around less often, and we permit the gas line with Buncombe County and pressure-test it before it ever lights. For sizing or a fuel check, call (828) 545-0525.
