Wood heat is popular out here, on large rural lots up Sandy Mush, Turkey Creek, and Newfound Road, and cold-air drainage runs these valleys 5 to 8 degrees colder than Asheville on clear nights. The wood-burning angle changes where asbestos tends to hide: instead of the fake embers on a gas-log set, think old asbestos-cement flue pipe, insulation wrapped around a flue or connector, and board behind a masonry firebox. Relining a chimney or pulling an old stove is exactly the kind of work that disturbs that material, so it pays to pause right at the point of demolition.
Test before the retrofit
The safe order holds: in a pre-1980 home, assume old flue pipe, insulation, board, and mastic could contain asbestos, and leave them alone until they're tested. Intact, they aren't putting fibers in your air. Some remote Leicester properties also have limited electrical capacity, which pushes owners toward wood or propane heat that works off-grid — good reasons to do the flue right.
