Can an older fireplace, hearth, or flue contain asbestos?
Yes — Maggie Valley's cabins and vacation rentals are exactly where old asbestos-laden gas logs turn up. On propane-only up here, many of these fireplaces are decades old, and the fake glowing embers packed with vintage log sets were sometimes pure asbestos. In older cabins it also hides in firebox board and flue cement. Left alone it's inert; handling or replacing that old material is the risk.
Idle cabins, old log sets
This is propane country at 3,000-plus feet, with a heavy concentration of rentals and second homes whose fireplaces sit idle for weeks, then have to light instantly for guests. Plenty of those units are old enough that their gas-log sets came with cotton-like 'glowing ember' material — one of the most notorious asbestos products ever sold for a hearth. If you own a rental here, a fireplace that hasn't been touched in years may be carrying exactly that material, and disturbing it during a cleaning or a swap is what puts fibers in the air.
Do the pre-season check right

That off-season visit is also the moment to deal with a suspect old log set: don't vacuum, brush, or yank out vintage ember material yourself.
