Watch for it in vintage gas-log ember fluff, firebox board, flue cement, and old flue insulation. It's harmless while it sits intact; the danger comes when a turnover reface or a heater swap cuts into it.

It's the same everywhere: intact asbestos behind plaster or under tile isn't a threat, but sawing, scraping, or demolishing it is. Academic-year demand here concentrates on easy-use gas fireplaces, and swapping in one of those means opening the old firebox — the disturbance moment. So in any pre-1980 home, test suspect material before any reface.
