Can I put gas logs in my Heatilator wood-burning fireplace?

Drive from a 1920s Montford foursquare to a South Asheville subdivision and you cross the whole gas-log question. The historic side is full of open masonry fireplaces built by hand — the kind that usually accept a vented log set with the damper open, giving you that tall yellow flame. West Asheville and Biltmore Village bungalows tend the same way. But a lot of newer construction used a factory-built, zero-clearance box, and many carry a wood-only rating that specifically excludes gas logs, ventless sets in particular.
