Can I put gas logs in my Heatilator wood-burning fireplace?
For Clyde, it depends on the vintage of your firebox. Many of the 1960s-80s ranch homes here have dated factory fireplaces that were never rated for gas logs — those are prime insert-upgrade candidates. Where you've got true masonry, vented logs work once we run a licensed line. We check the plate first. Call (828) 545-0525.
Dated ranch boxes are built for inserts, not logs
Clyde's 1960s-80s ranch-style homes often have aging factory fireplaces at the end of their service life, and a lot of those were wood-only from the factory — not candidates for gas logs. That's not bad news. A sealed gas insert retrofits neatly into that opening and delivers the efficient, power-optional heat the old builder box never could. Our guide at /guides/fireplace-insert-cost covers what drives the cost of that swap.
River humidity is hard on the flue
Clyde shares Canton and Waynesville's cold-air drainage, and the river humidity rusts dampers and degrades masonry chimneys over time. Before we set logs into a masonry firebox, we inspect the liner and damper — corrosion is common enough here that we'd rather find it before the conversion than after.
Confirm fuel, pull the Haywood permit
Clyde is mixed-fuel — natural gas in places, propane elsewhere — so we verify before sizing the burner and orifices. The gas line is licensed work: we run it, pressure-test it, permit it through Haywood County, and meet the inspector. We're 25 minutes west of the Emma Rd showroom; send your model number to start.
