Can I put gas logs in a Superior or Majestic wood-burning fireplace?
Usually yes, if it's a true wood-burning firebox with a working flue — a vented gas log set drops right in and runs off a licensed gas line. But it only works when the manufacturer lists that specific Superior or Majestic wood model for gas logs, the chimney is sound, and, for vented logs, the damper stays open. Vented logs love a real wood firebox
A vented gas log set — a Real Fyre hand-painted set, for instance — is designed to sit in a genuine wood-burning fireplace with the damper open. You get the tall, realistic yellow flame and the closest thing gas offers to a real wood fire. It's ambiance first: most of the heat goes up the chimney, so we'd never sell it as an efficient heater.
A masonry or a properly listed factory-built wood firebox with a sound flue is the ideal home for that set.
The catches — listing, damper, and vent-free rules
Here's where the Superior-or-Majestic detail matters. If your unit is a factory-built (zero-clearance) wood fireplace, it's only cleared for gas logs when the manufacturer's listing specifically allows it — and not every prefab wood box is. We read the rating plate before anything else, because installing logs in an unlisted firebox is a safety and warranty problem.
Vented sets need the damper open (or clamped open). Vent-free logs are a different animal entirely — [room-size BTU limits, an ODS shutoff, no bedrooms or baths, and added indoor moisture](/guides/are-ventless-gas-logs-safe) — and they're not permitted in every firebox or jurisdiction.
