Can I put gas logs in a Superior or Majestic wood-burning fireplace?

In Asheville, usually yes — if your Superior or Majestic is a genuine wood-burning firebox with a flue that still drafts, a vented gas log set drops in and runs off the natural-gas main most of the city already has. The catch is the model: a Montford masonry hearth is an easy yes, while a South Asheville prefab box only qualifies if its rating plate lists gas logs.

Two very different Asheville fireboxes

Asheville's housing splits the answer cleanly. The original masonry fireplaces in Montford and North Asheville were built to burn wood up a full clay-lined chimney — the ideal setting for a hand-painted Real Fyre vented set with the damper held open. Newer South Asheville construction leans on factory-built, zero-clearance wood boxes, and those carry a manufacturer's listing that either permits gas logs or doesn't. We read that rating plate before we quote a thing.

Because we're headquartered right here at 629 Emma Rd, you can stop by the showroom and see a vented set lit before you commit to your own room.

Flame you'll love, heat that mostly leaves

Set expectations on warmth. A vented log set is ambiance first — the tall yellow flame looks like real wood, but with the damper open most of the heat rides up the chimney. On Asheville's cold spring nights, when temperatures still drop into the 20s well past March, a set of logs won't carry a room the way a sealed insert will. If real heat is the goal, we'll show you both paths honestly.

Whichever you choose, the gas connection is licensed work. A showroom or a mason can sell you a beautiful box, but in North Carolina only a licensed gas contractor can run and pressure-test the line — we pull the Buncombe County permit, meet the inspector, and set the logs. One company, start to finish. Call (828) 545-0525 for a free assessment.
