Can I put gas logs in a Superior or Majestic wood-burning fireplace?
Yes, in Black Mountain a genuine wood-burning Superior or Majestic will usually take a vented gas log set, fed by the natural-gas service that runs through town. The thing to watch here is draft: at 2,400 feet, in the shaded wooded lots around Montreat and up the Swannanoa Valley, cold flues and downdrafts are real, and a vented set lives or dies on a chimney that pulls.
Draft is the local variable
A vented log set runs with the damper open, which means it depends entirely on the chimney drawing smoke and combustion gases up and out. Black Mountain's terrain works against that — tall trees, north-facing slopes, and the Swannanoa Valley's morning inversions can leave a cold column of air sitting in the flue like a plug. We check how your chimney drafts before we set logs, and sometimes the fix is as simple as a warm-up routine or a better cap, but we'd rather find that out first.
Masonry hearth or factory box
Downtown Black Mountain and the older Montreat cottages tend toward real masonry fireplaces, which are the natural home for a Real Fyre vented set. If your Superior or Majestic is instead a factory-built zero-clearance wood box, we read its rating plate — gas logs are only allowed when that specific listing permits them. In the wooded, damp lots up here we also look for moisture in the firebox and flue, since shade keeps chimneys from ever fully drying out.
The gas line and permit
We're just 15 minutes east of our Asheville showroom, so seeing a lit set on Emma Road is easy before you decide, and our techs know these valley chimneys well. When you do, the connection is licensed work — we run and pressure-test the gas line, pull the Buncombe County permit, and meet the inspector. A showroom or mason can't legally make that connection in North Carolina; we can. Call (828) 545-0525.
