Can I put gas logs in a Superior or Majestic wood-burning fireplace?
In Canton, yes — but after the flooding this valley has seen, we start with a hard look at the whole system, not just the logs. A genuine wood-burning Superior or Majestic can take a vented gas set, yet water-damaged fireboxes, gas connections, and flues are common along the Pigeon River, and those get inspected and made right before any gas log goes in.
Flood country changes the checklist
Canton's mill-town homes along the Pigeon River took on water in recent flooding, and that leaves marks a gas log install has to account for — corroded connections, silt in a firebox, a chimney that wicked moisture and never fully dried. Elevation and the condition of every gas connection matter here, so we inspect the line, the valve, the flue, and the firebox before we quote. A vented set belongs in a sound, dry chimney with a damper that still seats and opens; if the water compromised any of that, we fix it first.
Is your box really wood-burning?
The next question is what you actually have. Some Canton fireplaces are true masonry, ideal for a Real Fyre vented set; others are factory-built wood boxes, which only take gas logs when the manufacturer's rating plate allows it. We read that plate on your specific model rather than assume — dropping logs into an unlisted or damaged box is exactly the kind of shortcut this valley can't afford. And if backup heat during the next outage is really the goal, a sealed insert or keeping a wood-burning setup does that; vented logs are ambiance and won't heat a dark house.
One licensed crew, Haywood permit
The fog that settles on the valley floor rusts dampers and caps early here, so the annual service matters too. When we set logs, the gas connection is licensed work — we run and pressure-test the line, pull the Haywood County permit, and meet the inspector, 20 minutes west of our Asheville showroom.
