Can I put gas logs in a Superior or Majestic wood-burning fireplace?
In Flat Rock, usually yes, and often beautifully — your historic homes were built around oversized open masonry fireplaces, which are the ideal home for a large Real Fyre vented gas log set. The one thing we verify first is the flue: many of these 1800s chimneys have aging clay liners, and a vented set only works when that flue is sound and still drafts.
Built for a real log set
Flat Rock's 19th-century homes have something newer construction rarely does — a genuine, generously sized masonry firebox meant to burn wood up a full chimney. That's exactly the setting a vented gas log set was made for: hold the damper open, light a hand-painted set, and you get the tall yellow flame and the character these rooms deserve, without hauling wood or cold-start smoke. We can fit a set scaled to the larger openings common in Historic Flat Rock and around Kanuga.
Old chimneys, honest inspection
Age cuts the other way on the flue. Clay liners crack and shift over 150 years, mortar joints open up, and dampers warp until they won't hold the open position a vented set requires. So before we quote, we inspect the liner and the firebox, and if the chimney needs relining or repair to be safe, that comes first. One local note: these big open hearths can pull cold drafts into the room when idle — if that bothers you, a sealed insert stops the draft while keeping the mantel and surround intact. Preserving the home's character means keeping the original masonry working, not papering over a tired flue.
Natural gas, licensed and permitted
Flat Rock has natural-gas service, so the connection is usually a clean tie-in rather than a propane conversion — but running or extending that line is still licensed work no one but a licensed gas contractor can legally do in North Carolina.
