Can I put gas logs in a Superior or Majestic wood-burning fireplace?
In Arden, yes — but here's the local truth: a lot of the open masonry fireplaces in Royal Pines and Skyland are already pulling heat out of the room, and a vented gas log set won't change that, because it runs with the damper open too. A true wood-burning Superior or Majestic will take a set off Arden's natural-gas service, but if you want warmth, hear us out.
Why the open box loses heat
Those 1980s and 90s Arden fireplaces were built as open masonry hearths, and open hearths are heat-losers by nature — when idle, they let warm room air escape up the chimney, and even lit, a vented log set keeps the damper open so most of its own heat goes the same way. Add a set for the flame and the ambiance, absolutely; just know it's decorative, not a furnace. On a cold night in the valley you'll enjoy the fire, not feel it heat the house.
The insert that turns it into a heater
If you'd rather the fireplace earn its keep, the move in a house like yours is a sealed gas insert dropped into that same masonry opening. It closes off the heat-losing throat, burns efficiently behind glass, and — with millivolt or battery-backup ignition — keeps producing heat when the power's out. Same firebox, very different result. Gas logs are the simpler, lower-cost route for looks; an insert is the route for real, power-optional heat, and we'll price both so you can choose with eyes open.
Listing, license, Buncombe permit
If your fireplace is a factory-built box rather than masonry, its rating plate has to clear gas logs first — we check. Then the gas connection is licensed work only a licensed contractor can legally perform in North Carolina; we run it, pressure-test it, pull the Buncombe County permit, and meet the inspector.
