Can I put gas logs in a Superior or Majestic wood-burning fireplace?

In Waynesville, yes — a genuine wood-burning Superior or Majestic will take a vented gas log set — but at nearly 2,650 feet, with a heating season that runs about three weeks longer than Asheville's, we want you going in clear-eyed: vented logs are for ambiance, not for carrying the cold Haywood County nights. If heat is what you're after, we'll steer you elsewhere.

Ambiance is not the same as heat up here

Waynesville sits high and cold, and the old open fireboxes in Hazelwood and around Frog Level already leak plenty of warmth on their own. A vented log set runs with the damper wide open by design, so the tall flame looks wonderful while most of its heat goes straight up the chimney. On a January night at this elevation that flame is company, not a furnace. We say that plainly because we'd rather you be happy in February than sold in October.

The heat-producing alternative

If you want the fireplace to actually push back against the cold, the better answer in a house like yours is a sealed gas insert or a wood insert dropped into that same firebox — closed combustion, a proper liner, real efficient output, and heat that keeps coming when the power's out. Gas logs are the simpler, lower-cost route when you mainly want the look; an insert is the route when you want the room warm. We'll price both.

Fuel, listing, and the permit

Waynesville runs on a mix of natural gas in town and propane out toward the ridges, so we confirm your fuel and, for propane, set the correct orifices and pressure. We also read the firebox's rating plate — a factory-built wood box only takes logs if its listing allows. Then we run and pressure-test the gas line, pull the Haywood County permit, and set it. We're about 35 minutes west of our Asheville showroom, and we make the trip often. Call (828) 545-0525.
