Can I put gas logs in a Superior or Majestic wood-burning fireplace?
In Sylva, yes with a caveat — a true wood-burning Superior or Majestic will take a vented gas log set, but the local variable is upkeep. Rental housing near WCU is often heavily used and inconsistently maintained, and the Tuckasegee valley's river moisture rusts dampers and degrades flue liners fast, so we inspect the chimney closely before any gas logs go in.
Moisture is hard on these chimneys
Cold-air drainage and river dampness sit in the Tuckasegee valley, and that's rough on masonry. Dampers rust until they won't hold open, clay liners degrade, and a firebox that looks fine can be hiding a flue that no longer drafts cleanly. A vented log set depends on both — a damper that stays open and a chimney that pulls — so our first move in Sylva is a real inspection, not a sales pitch. If the flue needs a liner, that comes before the logs. Skipping that step just puts a flame in a chimney that can't carry its exhaust.
Rentals, historic homes, and the rating plate
Sylva's housing runs from student rentals to the historic homes over in Dillsboro, and the firebox type matters more than the address. Older Dillsboro masonry hearths are natural candidates for a Real Fyre vented set; a factory-built wood box, common in rentals and newer builds, only qualifies when its rating plate clears gas logs. For a landlord, that plate check plus a properly permitted install is also what protects the property and its insurance.
Fuel, license, Jackson County permit
Sylva runs on a mix of natural gas and propane, so we confirm your fuel and configure the set accordingly. Running or connecting that line is licensed work in North Carolina — a showroom or a mason can't legally do it — so we handle it, pressure-test it, pull the Jackson County permit, and meet the inspector. We're about 50 minutes west, and we work this end of the mountains regularly. Call (828) 545-0525.
