Can I remove my fireplace and chimney entirely to open up the wall during a remodel?
In Fletcher, most fireplaces come out more easily than people expect. The 1990s subdivisions here were built with factory-built, builder-grade boxes in metal chases, so once the gas is disconnected that assembly lifts out without a structural fight. Mostly metal, not masonry
Fletcher's housing is largely 1990s-and-newer subdivision stock, and those homes were built with prefab, zero-clearance fireboxes rather than full masonry chimneys. That's good news for a remodel: a factory-built unit and its metal flue are framed into a chase, so once the fuel line is disconnected the whole thing comes out cleanly and the wall closes up without an engineer involved. The handful of older masonry stacks around here are the ones that need a structural review before demo, since those can be load-bearing.
Commercial jobs, same rule
The I-26 and airport corridor brings commercial remodels too, and the licensing rule doesn't change: any gas fireplace or log set has its line shut off, disconnected, and capped, permitted with Henderson County and pressure-tested, before demo. Running or capping gas in North Carolina is licensed work; a general contractor or handyman legally can't do that piece. We coordinate the cap around your build schedule. Reface instead
