Can you reface a prefab builder-grade fireplace, or only masonry ones?

Both reface, and in Arden it more often leans masonry — the 1980s-90s homes in Royal Pines and Skyland were built with open masonry fireboxes. You can reface those in new stone directly onto the brick. But those tired open hearths pull heat out of the room, so the smarter Arden reface usually wraps a sealed insert, not just fresh stone.

Open masonry that's losing you heat

The established Skyland and Royal Pines neighborhoods are full of open masonry fireplaces, and on a winter night an open firebox is a net heat loss — warm room air rides straight up the flue. Refacing the front changes the looks and nothing else. If you're already opening up the surround, dropping in a sealed [gas insert](/services/fireplace-inserts), which commonly runs 70 percent efficient or better, turns that decorative hole into a real heater. Then the masonry gets refaced around it.

If yours is a metal box instead

Some Arden homes, especially newer infill and the Biltmore Park area, have zero-clearance metal fireboxes rather than masonry. Those reface by a different method: the weight can't sit on the steel, so we frame a non-combustible substrate to carry it, held to the manufacturer's clearances and any required clean-face front. Same custom finish, tighter rules — and the Biltmore Park retail and office spaces get the same treatment as the houses.
