Can you reface a prefab builder-grade fireplace, or only masonry ones?
Both reface, and in Fairview the reface usually starts with a fuel decision. These large wooded lots run on propane and a lot of homeowners heat with wood, so before we dress up the firebox we settle whether you're keeping wood, converting to gas, or upgrading a propane unit. Refacing a metal box needs a framed substrate; masonry bonds more directly.
Wood country, and the creosote question
Fairview's wooded lots make wood heat natural, and out here creosote buildup is the leading cause of chimney fires when the fall sweep gets skipped. If you're refacing a wood-burning fireplace, that's the moment to make sure the flue and liner are clean and sound — a beautiful new stone surround doesn't make an unswept chimney safe. Some homeowners use the reface as the push to convert wood to a sealed gas insert; others keep the wood and just want it clean and current. Both are fine calls.
Propane, not a gas main
Fairview is propane country, not natural gas, so any conversion or new gas unit runs on LP — which burns hotter per unit and needs its orifices and pressures set for it. That's licensed gas work we permit with Buncombe County and pressure-test; a showroom or a handyman legally can't connect it. The refacing itself is separate: on a factory-built box the stone rides on a framed non-combustible substrate set to the unit's clearances, and on masonry it keys into the brick.
