Can you reface a prefab builder-grade fireplace, or only masonry ones?

Both can be refaced, and 15 minutes from our shop we do a lot of it in Black Mountain and Montreat. Which job you're facing depends on the house: the older downtown and Montreat homes usually have original masonry, while newer builds carry a factory-built metal box. The wooded, shaded lots up toward Montreat add one wrinkle worth checking first — moisture.

Shade and damp behind the pretty surround

Montreat's heavily wooded lots keep houses cool, shaded, and slow to dry, and the Swannanoa Valley's morning inversions pool cold, damp air down low. That moisture is hard on masonry chimneys and can quietly work into a prefab's wood chase. Before we fasten new stone to either, we confirm the structure behind it is dry and sound — refacing is a finish, not a fix for what's rotting or cracking underneath.

Masonry bonds, metal boxes get a substrate

On a true masonry fireplace the stone or tile keys into the brick mass directly. On a zero-clearance unit it can't — the weight has to ride on a non-combustible substrate we frame around the listed box, set to the manufacturer's clearances and any required clean-face front. Same custom result, two different builds. In a cold pocket like this, where mornings can run 10 to 15 degrees below Asheville, we'll usually talk about sealing the firebox at the same time so the finished fireplace actually holds heat.

Close to home, easy to assess

Being just up the road in Buncombe County, we can get out to look at your actual unit quickly and tell you honestly whether to reface it, reface around a new [gas insert](/services/fireplace-inserts) for real cold-morning heat, or replace a worn box. Any gas line gets permitted with the county and inspected. The assessment is free. Call (828) 545-0525.
